Kia Sportage Owner’s Manual (5th Generation, NQ5; 2022+) / Driving your vehicle / Brake system / In the event of brake failure

Operation

WARNING

Do not use the parking brake to stop the vehicle while it is moving unless there is an emergency. Applying it at normal driving speeds can cause a sudden loss of control. If you must use the parking brake to stop the Kia Sportage, apply it with extreme caution.

WARNING

When descending a long or steep hill, avoid keeping the brakes applied continuously. Shift to a lower gear to help control the vehicle’s speed. Continuous braking can overheat the brakes and temporarily reduce their effectiveness.

CAUTION

Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving. This can raise brake temperatures abnormally and cause excessive wear to the brake linings and pads.

NOTE

Brake override when the accelerator is stuck

Operation

  1. Press the brakes firmly and steadily.

  2. Bring the vehicle to a safe stop.

  3. Select P (Park), switch off the engine, and apply the parking brake.

  4. Check whether anything is obstructing the accelerator pedal.

Operating condition

NOTE

If you find no obstruction and the problem continues, have the Kia Sportage towed to a professional workshop for inspection. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.

Disc brake wear indicator

When the front or rear brake pads are worn, the brakes may produce a high-pitched squeal. Replace brake pads on the front or rear axle in pairs.

WARNING

Do not ignore a high-pitched brake wear warning. Continuing to drive without addressing it can reduce braking performance and may lead to a serious accident.

CAUTION

Do not continue driving with worn brake pads. Doing so can damage the braking system and lead to expensive repairs.

NOTE

Brake dust may collect on the wheels during normal driving. Some dust is unavoidable as the brakes wear, and it may contribute to brake noise.
