Kia Sportage: Necessary vehicle inspectionsCheck the following fluid levels regularly, following the intervals specified in the maintenance schedule for your Kia Sportage:
Engine oil
Engine coolant
Brake fluid
Washer fluid
For inspection details and service intervals, refer to the Maintenance section.
WARNING
Keep your attention on the road whenever the vehicle is moving. Your primary responsibility is to operate the vehicle safely and legally. Do not use handheld devices or operate other equipment or vehicle systems if doing so could distract you from driving.
Check that the exhaust system is free from leaks.
Have the exhaust system inspected whenever the Kia Sportage is raised for an oil change or another service procedure.
If the exhaust sound changes or the underbody is struck by an object, arrange to have the system checked as soon as possible by an authorised Kia dealer, service partner or professional workshop.
WARNING
Do not breathe exhaust fumes, and do not leave the engine running for a long time in an enclosed or poorly ventilated area. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless gas that can cause unconsciousness or death by asphyxiation.
Check that the windows, outside mirrors and exterior lights are clean and provide a clear view.
Inspect the tyres for their general condition before setting off.
Look beneath the vehicle for any signs of fluid leakage.
Before reversing, check that the area behind the vehicle is clear of obstacles.
Close and lock all doors before driving.
Adjust the seat so that you can reach and operate all controls comfortably.
Fasten your seat belt.
Set the inside and outside rearview mirrors for a clear view around the Kia Sportage.
Check that all lights are working.
Review the instrument gauges before setting off.
With the vehicle in ON, check that the warning lights illuminate as expected.
Release the parking brake and confirm that the brake warning light has gone out.
WARNING
If you stop or park with the engine running, do not press and hold the accelerator for an extended period. Doing so may overheat the engine or exhaust system and create a fire risk.
Before selecting D (Drive) or R (Reverse), check the area around the vehicle for people, especially children.
Secure all items inside the vehicle. During sudden braking or a sharp turn, loose objects may move onto the floor and interfere with the pedals, potentially causing an accident.
Never drive after consuming alcohol, taking drugs or using other substances that impair your ability to drive. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your reflexes, perception and judgement.
Driving under the influence of drugs or other impairing substances is as dangerous as, or more dangerous than, driving after drinking alcohol.
Wear suitable footwear when driving. High heels, ski boots, sandals and other unsuitable shoes may make it harder to operate the brake and accelerator pedals correctly.
