Kia Sportage: Parking Distance Warning Malfunction and Precautions
Parking Distance Warning Malfunction
 |
A: Check Driver Assistance system.
|
If Parking Distance Warning or one of its related components develops a problem, a warning message appears in the Kia
Sportage instrument cluster.
You can view the warning details in Master Warning mode under the utility information view of the cluster display. If
the system still does not operate correctly, Kia recommends having it inspected by an authorised Kia dealer or service
partner.
Parking Distance Warning Disabled
|
A: Driver Assistance system limited. Ultrasonic sensor blocked.
|
The ultrasonic sensors detect objects around the Kia Sportage. Snow, rain, dirt, or other material on a sensor may
temporarily limit Parking Distance Warning or prevent it from operating. The cluster’s utility information view, in
Master Warning mode, identifies an ultrasonic sensor affected by a detection problem.
Remove any material covering the sensor and keep it clean so Parking Distance Warning can operate normally. If the
system still does not work correctly after the sensor has been cleaned, Kia recommends having it inspected by an
authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
NOTE
If a malfunction occurs or an ultrasonic sensor is blocked while Parking Distance Warning is active, a warning
indicator (
) appears in the direction
of the affected area. You can also check the warning in Master Warning mode under the cluster display’s utility
information view.
Limitations of Forward, Side, and Reverse Parking Distance Warning
Parking Distance Warning may not operate correctly in the following situations:
- Moisture on a sensor has frozen.
- A sensor is covered by snow, water, or another foreign material. The system should operate normally again after
the obstruction is removed.
- The weather is extremely hot or cold.
- A sensor or its assembly has been disassembled.
- The sensor surface has been pressed firmly or struck by a hard object.
- The sensor surface has been scratched by a sharp object.
- A high-pressure washer is directed at a sensor or the area around it.
- A nearby source of ultrasonic waves is operating, such as a vehicle horn, motorcycle engine, or large-vehicle air
brakes.
Parking Distance Warning may also give unreliable results or malfunction under these conditions:
- Heavy rain or water spray is present.
- Water is running over the surface of a sensor.
- The system is affected by sensors on another vehicle.
- A sensor is covered with snow or ice.
- The Kia Sportage is travelling on an uneven or gravel road, or through bushes.
- An object or device that produces ultrasonic waves is close to a sensor.
- The licence plate has been fitted in a position different from its original location.
- A licence plate that does not meet the official standard has been installed.
- A non-standard licence plate is fitted to the vehicle.
- The bumper height or the installation position of an ultrasonic sensor has been changed.
- Equipment or accessories have been attached beside the ultrasonic sensors.
- A luggage compartment, trailer, or carrier has been fitted at the rear of the vehicle.
The ultrasonic sensors may not detect the following objects:
- Sharp or thin objects, such as ropes, chains, or small poles.
- Narrow objects, including the corners of square columns.
- Materials that absorb ultrasonic waves, such as clothing, spongy materials, or snow.
- Objects less than 100 cm (40 in.) long and less than 14 cm (6 in.) in diameter.
- Pedestrians, animals, or objects located very close to the ultrasonic sensors.
- Objects in the side area between the front and rear ultrasonic sensors, or objects approaching that area.
WARNING
- Parking Distance Warning is an assistance feature, and its operation can be affected by several factors, including
environmental conditions. You are responsible for checking the area in front of and behind the Kia Sportage before
and while parking.
- The new-vehicle warranty does not cover accidents or vehicle damage resulting from a malfunction of Parking
Distance Warning.
- Take particular care near objects, pedestrians, and especially children. An ultrasonic sensor may not detect an
object because of its distance, size, or material, which can reduce the system’s effectiveness.
- Parking Distance Warning does not issue alerts in the order objects are detected. The warning sequence can vary
with vehicle speed and with the shape of a person, animal, or object.
- If Parking Distance Warning does not operate correctly, Kia recommends having the Kia Sportage inspected by an
authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
- Driving with the tailgate open is not recommended. If it is open, take particular care to maintain safety.
