Kia Sportage Owner’s Manual (5th Generation, NQ5; 2022+) / Driving your vehicle / Transmission / Shift lock system

For added safety, the Kia Sportage automatic or dual clutch transmission includes a shift lock system. It prevents the transmission from being shifted from P (Park) to R (Reverse) unless the brake pedal is pressed.

To shift from P (Park) to R (Reverse), follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.

  2. Start the engine, or turn the ignition switch or ENGINE START/STOP button to the ON position.

  3. Move the shift lever to the required position.

If you repeatedly press and release the brake pedal while the shift lever is in P (Park), you may hear a chattering sound near the lever. This is normal and does not indicate a fault with the Kia Sportage shift lock system.

WARNING

Always press the brake pedal fully before and while shifting out of P (Park). This helps prevent the vehicle from moving unexpectedly and injuring someone inside or nearby.
