Kia Sportage: Limitations of Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist
Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist may not warn you or provide braking assistance, even when a pedestrian or object
is present, in any of the following situations:
- The vehicle has a problem or has been modified:
- Non-factory equipment or accessories have been installed.
- Brake components, such as the discs or calipers, have been modified.
- The wheels are misaligned or suspension components have been changed.
- Accessories are attached to the steering wheel, or steering components have been modified.
- The Kia Sportage is unstable because of an accident or another cause.
- The bumper height or the installation position of the rear ultrasonic sensors has been changed.
- Abnormal tyre pressure or excessive cargo has caused the vehicle’s overall height to tilt significantly.
- Snow chains, a spare tyre, or a wheel of a different size have been fitted.
- A wide-angle camera or ultrasonic sensor is damaged.
- A wide-angle camera or ultrasonic sensor is covered with snow, dirt, or other foreign material.
- Conditions around the vehicle interfere with detection:
- A pattern on the road affects the camera’s view.
- Shadows or reflected light appear on the ground.
- The vehicle is manoeuvring through a narrow lane or parking space.
- A pedestrian or object is close to the vehicle’s path.
- The vehicle is moving through a narrow lane or confined parking area.
- The road surface is uneven, such as an unpaved or gravel road, a road joint, or a ramp.
- A trailer or carrier is fitted near a rear corner radar.
- A light source or poor weather, such as heavy rain, fog, or snow, obscures a wide-angle camera.
- The surrounding area is extremely bright or dark.
- The outside temperature is extremely high or low.
- Wind is strong, above 20 km/h (12 mph), or blows across the rear bumper.
- A nearby source of loud noise is operating, such as a vehicle horn, a loud motorcycle, or truck air brakes.
- An object or device producing ultrasonic waves is close to a sensor.
- A nearby wireless device with a transmission function affects a rear ultrasonic sensor.
- The system is affected by another vehicle’s Parking Distance Warning.
- The road is slippery or inclined.
- A pedestrian or object is difficult for the system to recognise:
- The pedestrian is difficult to detect.
- There is a difference in ground height between the vehicle and the pedestrian.
- The pedestrian’s image blends into the background in the wide-rear-view camera.
- The pedestrian is close to the rear edge of the vehicle.
- The pedestrian is not standing upright.
- The pedestrian is unusually short or tall, making detection difficult.
- A pedestrian or cyclist wears clothing that blends into the background.
- A pedestrian’s clothing does not reflect ultrasonic waves well.
- The object’s size, thickness, height, or shape makes it difficult to reflect ultrasonic waves. Examples
include poles, bushes, kerbs, carts, and the edge of a wall.
- The pedestrian or object is moving quickly.
- The pedestrian or object is very close to the rear of the vehicle.
- A large object, such as a wall, is positioned behind the pedestrian or object.
- The object is not near the centre of the front or rear of the vehicle.
- The object’s surface is not parallel to the bumper.
- Driving conditions affect system operation:
- The driver moves the vehicle immediately after shifting to R (Reverse) or D (Drive).
- The driver accelerates or turns the vehicle in a circle.
WARNING
- Remain attentive whenever you drive. You are responsible for controlling the brakes and driving the Kia Sportage
safely.
- Before moving the vehicle, check all around it for pedestrians and objects.
- Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist may perform differently depending on the situation. If the vehicle is
travelling above 4 km/h (2 mph), collision-avoidance assistance is provided only when pedestrians are detected. Look
around and remain alert whenever you move the vehicle.
- Rear ultrasonic sensors may not detect some objects because of their distance, size, or material, which can limit
the system’s effectiveness.
- Depending on road and surrounding conditions, Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist may not operate correctly or may
activate when assistance is not needed.
- Do not rely on Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist alone. Doing so could result in vehicle damage or injury.
- Keep the wide-angle cameras and ultrasonic sensors clean so they can detect the area around the Kia Sportage.
- Do not clean the camera lens with acidic or alkaline detergents. Use only mild soap or a neutral detergent, then
rinse the lens thoroughly with water.
- Do not direct a high-pressure washer at the wide-angle cameras, rear ultrasonic sensors, or the area around them.
The force of the water may cause a camera or sensor to malfunction.
- Do not place items such as bumper stickers or bumper guards near the cameras or ultrasonic sensors, and do not
paint the bumper. These changes may affect Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist performance.
- Never disassemble or strike a wide-angle camera or any ultrasonic sensor component.
- Do not apply unnecessary force to the cameras or ultrasonic sensors. If a camera or sensor is forced out of
alignment, Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist may not work correctly. Kia recommends having the system checked by an
authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
- A sudden braking manoeuvre to avoid a collision may produce noise.
- If another warning is already sounding, such as the seat-belt warning chime, the Parking Collision-Avoidance
Assist alert may not be audible.
- Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist may not work properly if the bumper has been damaged, replaced, or repaired.
- Strong electromagnetic waves may interfere with Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist and affect its operation.
- If the vehicle audio system is playing at a high volume, passengers may not hear the system’s warning sounds.
- Brake control may not operate correctly depending on the status of ESC (Electronic Stability Control). The system
provides a warning only in either of these situations:
- The ESC warning light is illuminated.
- ESC is operating to perform another function.
- Check the brake fluid and brake pads regularly. Brake performance may be reduced depending on their condition.
- Switch off Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist when towing a trailer. When reversing with a trailer, the system may
activate because it detects the trailer.
NOTE
Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist can detect a pedestrian or object in situations such as these:
- A pedestrian is standing behind the vehicle.
- A large obstacle, such as another vehicle, is parked directly behind the centre of the Kia Sportage.
