Kia Sportage: Adjusting steering wheel angle and height
|
Operation
Pull the steering wheel lock-release lever (1) down to release the adjustment mechanism.
Move the steering wheel to your preferred angle and adjust its reach forward or backward.
Pull the lock-release lever up to secure the steering wheel in position.
TIP
Set the steering wheel to a comfortable position before driving your Kia Sportage.
WARNING
Never adjust the steering wheel angle or height while driving. Doing so could distract you or cause you to lose control, leading to a collision, severe injury or death.
After making an adjustment, push the steering wheel up and down to confirm that it is securely locked.
When adjusting the steering wheel, do not push or pull it forcefully. Excessive force could damage the adjustment mechanism.
CAUTION
Do not press or pull hard on the steering wheel while adjusting it. Excessive force may damage the steering column.
NOTE
After adjustment, the lock-release lever may sometimes fail to lock the steering wheel on the first attempt. This is not a malfunction; it can happen when the locking gears engage. Adjust the steering wheel again, then secure it with the lever.
The following conditions may occur during normal operation of the Kia Sportage:
The MDPS warning light does not illuminate.
Steering may feel heavier immediately after you turn the ignition switch or press the
ENGINE START/STOP button. The Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) system is carrying out its
checks; steering effort should return to normal when the checks are complete.
You may hear a click from the MDPS relay when the ignition switch or ENGINE START/STOP button is
moved to the ON or LOCK position.
You may hear motor noise when the vehicle is stationary or moving slowly.
If the MDPS detects a fault, steering assistance may stop to help prevent an accident. The warning light on the instrument cluster may illuminate or flash, and steering may become difficult. Move the Kia Sportage to a safe place and have the system checked promptly.
If you turn the steering wheel repeatedly while the vehicle is stationary, steering effort may increase. It should return to normal after a few minutes.
If the MDPS system does not operate normally, a warning light will appear on the instrument cluster and the steering wheel may become difficult to turn or behave abnormally. Have the system inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
In low temperatures, operating the steering wheel may produce unusual noise. This is a normal condition, and the noise should disappear as the temperature rises.
After jump-starting the vehicle because the battery was discharged, steering may not work normally at first due to low battery voltage. This should be temporary: once the battery charge stabilises, steering operation should return to normal. Before driving, turn the steering wheel to check that it operates correctly.
