Kia Sportage Owner’s Manual (5th Generation, NQ5; 2022+) / Seating and safety restraints / Air bag—supplemental restraint system / Airbag inflation conditions

The air bags fitted to your vehicle may differ from those shown in the illustrations.

Air bag inflation conditions

Kia Sportage illustration of front air bag inflation in a frontal collision

Front air bags are designed to inflate in a frontal collision when warranted by the impact's severity, speed and direction.

Kia Sportage illustration of side and curtain air bag inflation in a side impact

Side and/or curtain air bags are designed to inflate when side-impact sensors detect a collision that meets the deployment criteria. Their response depends on factors including the impact's strength, speed and direction.

NOTE

Side and curtain air bags

On vehicles equipped with a rollover sensor, the side and curtain air bags are designed to inflate when the sensor detects a rollover.

Front air bags are designed primarily for frontal collisions, but may also inflate in another type of collision if the front impact sensors detect a sufficiently strong impact. Side air bags, including curtain air bags, are designed primarily for side impacts, but may also inflate in another collision if the side impact sensors detect a sufficiently strong impact.

For example, side or curtain air bags may deploy if the rollover sensors detect a possible rollover, even if the vehicle does not actually roll over. They may also deploy in other situations, such as when the vehicle is tilted during towing. In a rollover, side and curtain air bags may deploy to help prevent occupants from being ejected, particularly occupants who are wearing seat belts, even though these air bags do not provide impact protection in that situation.

Impacts to the vehicle chassis from bumps or objects on rough roads or pavements may also cause air bags to deploy. Drive carefully on unpaved roads and surfaces not intended for vehicle traffic to help prevent unintended deployment.

NOTE

If equipped with a rollover sensor

The side and curtain air bags are also designed to inflate when a rollover is detected by the rollover sensor.
