Kia Sportage: Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Operating the ESC OFF buttonThe Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) helps prevent the wheels from locking during braking, helping you steer and maintain vehicle stability. It supports the driver’s control of the Kia Sportage but does not replace careful driving.
If the ABS warning light
remains illuminated, have the system inspected as
soon as possible by a professional workshop. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
NOTE
You may hear a click inside the vehicle shortly after starting off. This is normal and indicates that the ABS is operating its self-check.
After jump-starting the Kia Sportage because of a discharged battery, the vehicle may not run as smoothly and the ABS warning light may illuminate. Low battery voltage can cause this; it does not necessarily mean the ABS has malfunctioned.
Do not pump the brake pedal.
Recharge the battery before driving.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) helps stabilise the Kia Sportage during cornering manoeuvres.
ESC does not replace safe driving. Its ability to help prevent a loss of control depends on factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions and the driver’s steering inputs.

Operation
Press the ESC OFF button for approximately half a second to switch off ESC. The ESC
OFF indicator
illuminates and a warning chime
sounds.
To switch off both ESC and traction control, press and hold the ESC OFF button for approximately
three seconds. The ESC OFF indicator
illuminates and a warning
chime sounds.
Press the ESC OFF button again to switch ESC back on. The ESC OFF indicator
goes out.
WARNING
Always wear your seat belt. No system, regardless of how advanced it is, can compensate for every driving error or road condition. Drive responsibly at all times.
Drive carefully even when ESC is available. The system can assist with maintaining control only in certain conditions.
Never press the ESC OFF button while ESC is operating and its indicator is blinking. Switching ESC off during operation could cause the vehicle to lose stability and slip out of control.
NOTE
A click may be heard inside the vehicle shortly after you begin driving. This is normal and indicates that ESC is operating its self-check.
When testing the vehicle on a dynamometer, make sure ESC is switched off and the ESC OFF indicator is illuminated. If ESC remains on, it may prevent the vehicle from increasing speed and lead to an incorrect diagnosis.
Switching ESC off does not affect the operation of the ABS or the braking system.
