Kia Sportage Owner’s Manual (5th Generation, NQ5; 2022+) / What to Do in an Emergency / If You Have a Flat Tyre (With Spare Tyre): If Equipped / Changing Tyres

Procedure

  1. Move the Kia Sportage to a safe, level place away from traffic and stop it.

  2. Switch on the hazard warning flasher.

  3. Apply the parking brake fully.

  4. Shift the gear to P (Park) and switch off the vehicle.

  5. Take the jack, jack handle, wheel lug nut wrench, wheel-cover removal tool if equipped, and spare tyre out of the vehicle.

  6. Place a block in front of and behind the wheel diagonally opposite the wheel being changed. This helps prevent the Kia Sportage from moving while it is raised.

  7. If the wheel has a cover, insert the supplied removal tool into the opening and pull the cover off.

    NOTE

Use the supplied tool (1) to remove the wheel cover. Using another tool may damage it.

  8. Loosen each wheel lug nut by turning it counterclockwise one turn. Do not remove the nuts until the tyre has been lifted off the ground.

  9. Position the jack at the designated front jacking point (1) or rear jacking point (2), as appropriate.

  10. Insert the jack handle into the jack and turn it clockwise to raise the vehicle until the tyre just clears the ground. Before removing the wheel nuts, make sure the vehicle is stable.

  11. Remove the wheel nuts by hand.

  12. Slide the wheel off the studs and lay it flat so it cannot roll away.

  13. Lift the spare tyre and align its holes with the wheel studs. Tilt it slightly so the top hole lines up with the top stud, then move the wheel gently from side to side until it slides over the remaining studs.

  14. Hold the spare wheel against the hub and fit the wheel nuts by hand. Move the tyre gently to confirm that it is seated fully against the hub.

  15. Turn the jack handle counterclockwise to lower the Kia Sportage to the ground.

  16. Fit the wheel lug nut wrench over each nut, making sure the socket is fully seated, and tighten the nuts to 11–13 kgf·m (79–94 lbf·ft). Tighten them in an alternating pattern, working around the wheel until every nut is secure. Check each nut again for tightness.

After changing a tyre, have the Kia Sportage checked by a qualified workshop or obtain other professional assistance. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.

WARNING

Wheel Lug Nut Tightening Torque

TIP

If the spare tyre pressure is below the recommended value, drive slowly to the nearest service station and inflate it correctly. If the pressure is too high, reduce it to the specified level.

CAUTION

The Kia Sportage uses metric threads on its wheel studs and nuts. When refitting a wheel, reinstall the original nuts or use replacement nuts with metric threads and the same chamfer shape. A non-metric nut fitted to a metric stud, or a metric nut fitted to a non-metric stud, will not secure the wheel correctly and can damage the stud, requiring replacement.

Many wheel lug nuts do not have metric threads. Check the thread type carefully before fitting aftermarket nuts or wheels. If you are unsure, consult a qualified workshop. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
