Kia Sportage: If the Engine Overheats
TIP
If the temperature gauge indicates that the engine is overheating, you may notice reduced power or a loud pinging or
knocking noise. These symptoms can indicate that the engine is too hot.
Cooling Down the Vehicle
Procedure
- Stop the Kia Sportage in a safe place.
- Switch on the hazard warning flasher.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Shift the gear to P (Park) or N (Neutral).
- If the air conditioning is on, switch it off.
- Check the following:
- Whether the engine cooling fan is operating.
- The water pump drive belt.
- The belt tension.
- Whether coolant is leaking from the radiator, hoses, or underneath the vehicle. If the air conditioning has
been used, water draining from it after stopping is normal.
- Wait for the engine temperature to return to normal.
- Continue carefully and watch for any further signs that the engine is overheating.
If the Cooling Fan Does Not Work
Procedure
If Coolant Is Escaping
Procedure
- Stop the engine.
- Do not open the bonnet.
- Wait until the coolant stops flowing or the steam has cleared.
- Add enough coolant to the reservoir.
If the Water Pump Drive Belt Is Broken
Procedure
- Stop the engine.
- Contact a qualified workshop or arrange other professional assistance. Kia recommends calling an authorised Kia
dealer or service partner.
If Overheating Happens Again
What to do
- Contact a qualified workshop or arrange other professional assistance. Kia recommends calling an authorised Kia
dealer or service partner.
WARNING
While the Kia Sportage engine is running, keep your hair, hands,
and clothing away from the cooling fan and drive belts to avoid injury.
Never
remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Pressurised coolant may escape through the opening and cause
serious burns.
CAUTION
- A substantial loss of coolant indicates a leak in the cooling system. Have the system checked as soon as possible
by a qualified workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
- If the engine has overheated because the coolant level is low, adding coolant too quickly may cause cracks in the
engine. Add coolant slowly, in small amounts, to reduce the risk of damage.
