Checking tyre pressure

Check every tyre, including the spare if one is provided, at least once a month when cold. Inflate each tyre to the pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tyre inflation pressure label.

If the Kia Sportage is fitted with tyres that differ in size from those listed on the placard or pressure label, determine the correct inflation pressure for the tyres installed.

The Kia Sportage is equipped with a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). If one or more tyres become significantly underinflated, the low tyre pressure warning light illuminates. Stop and check the tyres as soon as it is safe to do so, then inflate them to the correct pressure. Driving on a significantly underinflated tyre can cause it to overheat and fail. Low pressure can also reduce fuel efficiency and tyre tread life, and affect the vehicle’s handling and stopping ability.

TPMS supports proper tyre care but does not replace it. The driver remains responsible for maintaining the correct tyre pressures, even when underinflation has not yet reached the level that triggers the warning light.

The TPMS also has a malfunction indicator. If the system detects a fault, the indicator flashes for approximately one minute and then stays illuminated. This sequence repeats at subsequent vehicle start-ups for as long as the malfunction remains. When the TPMS malfunction indicator stays on after flashing, the system may not detect or report low tyre pressure as intended.

A TPMS fault can have several causes, including fitting replacement or alternative tyres or wheels that prevent the system from working correctly. After replacing one or more tyres or wheels, check that the TPMS malfunction indicator is not active and that the replacement equipment allows the system to operate as intended.

NOTE

If any of the following occurs, have the TPMS inspected by a qualified workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.

  1. The low tyre pressure warning light or TPMS malfunction indicator does not illuminate for three seconds when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position or the engine is running.
  2. The TPMS malfunction indicator continues to illuminate after flashing for approximately one minute.
  3. The low tyre pressure location indicator remains illuminated.
