Kia Sportage: Lane Keeping Assist malfunction and limitations
![]() |
A: Check Driver Assistance system |
If Lane Keeping Assist is not working correctly, a warning message appears and the yellow indicator
illuminates on the
instrument cluster.
If this warning appears, have the system inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
Lane Keeping Assist disabled
![]() |
A: Driver Assistance system limited. Camera obscured. |
Snow, rain or other foreign material covering a sensor or the windscreen area in front of the front view camera can reduce detection performance. Lane Keeping Assist may then be temporarily limited or disabled.
When this occurs, a warning message may appear with the Master Warning light
and the yellow Lane Safety
warning light
on the instrument
cluster. This is normal system behaviour when the sensors are obstructed.
After snow, rain or other material is cleared, Lane Keeping Assist should operate correctly again. Keep the relevant sensor areas clean.
If the system still does not work correctly after the obstruction has been removed, have the Kia Sportage inspected by an authorised Kia dealer or service partner. This also applies if equipment such as a trailer or carrier has been removed from the rear bumper and the system remains unavailable.
WARNING
Lane Keeping Assist may not work correctly even if no warning message or indicator is currently shown on the instrument cluster.
Restarting the vehicle may not restore Lane Keeping Assist while an obstruction or system malfunction remains.
NOTE
You can view this information in Master Warning mode in the Utility view of the instrument-cluster display.
Lane Keeping Assist may not operate correctly, or may respond unexpectedly, in the situations listed below. Its performance depends on how clearly the system can detect lane markings or road edges, so remain attentive and keep control of your Kia Sportage.
The lane is obstructed or difficult for the system to recognise because:
Rain, snow, dirt, oil or other material covers the lane markings or road edges.
The colour of the lane markings or road edges is difficult to distinguish from the road surface.
Other markings or road edges near the lane resemble the lane boundaries.
The lane markings or road edges are faint or damaged.
A shadow from an object beside the road, such as a central reservation, crash barrier, noise barrier or bush, or from another vehicle, falls across the lane.
The number of lanes changes, or lane markings or road edges cross one another.
The road has more than two lane markings or road edges.
The lane markings or road edges form a complex pattern, or a temporary structure, such as one in a construction area, replaces the usual lines.
The road has other markings, such as zigzag lines, crosswalk markings or road signs.
A lane marking disappears suddenly, for example at an intersection.
The lane or road is unusually wide or narrow.
A road edge is present without a lane marking.
A boundary structure, such as a tollgate, pavement or kerb, affects the roadway.
You are driving in a bus-only lane or in the lane immediately to its left or right.
The distance to the vehicle ahead is extremely short, or that vehicle obscures the lane marking or road edge.
NOTE
For precautions concerning the front view camera, refer to “Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) (Sensor Fusion).”
WARNING
The driver is responsible for controlling the Kia Sportage safely. Do not rely on Lane Keeping Assist as a substitute for attentive driving.
Road and surrounding conditions may cause Lane Keeping Assist to stop operating or work incorrectly. Stay alert and be prepared to steer at all times.
The system may be cancelled or may not work correctly when road conditions or the surroundings make lane markings or road edges difficult to recognise.
If the lane is not detected correctly, refer to “Lane Keeping Assist malfunction and limitations.”
For safety, switch off Lane Keeping Assist when towing a trailer or another vehicle.
At high speeds, the system may not control the steering wheel. Always obey the posted speed limit when using Lane Keeping Assist.
If another function displays a warning message or sounds an alert, the Lane Keeping Assist warning message or audible warning may not be provided.
Noise around the vehicle may make the Lane Keeping Assist warning difficult to hear. Set the audio volume at a moderate level and remain aware of your surroundings.
Objects attached to the steering wheel may interfere with steering assistance.
Lane Keeping Assist may not operate for approximately 15 seconds after the vehicle is started or while the front view camera is initialising.
Lane Keeping Assist does not operate in the following situations:
The turn signal is on, or for a period after it has been switched off.
When the system is switched on or immediately after a lane change, the vehicle is not being driven near the centre of the lane.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) is active.
The vehicle turns sharply on a curved road.
The vehicle speed is below 55 km/h (35 mph) or above 210 km/h (130 mph).
The vehicle makes a sudden lane change.
The vehicle brakes suddenly.
Exceeding the vehicle’s maximum permitted load or concentrating cargo in one area can reduce driving stability and affect Lane Keeping Assist performance.
