Kia Sportage: Out of position warningThe out-of-position warning detects whether the front passenger is sitting in a position that could affect air bag
deployment. If the system detects an improper seating position, the front passenger air bag ON/OFF indicator (
) may change to OFF to show that the front
passenger air bag is deactivated.
When this happens, a warning message appears on the instrument cluster and an audible alert sounds until the passenger returns to a proper seating position.
Operating condition
The system detects that the front passenger is out of position while the vehicle is travelling above 10 km/h (6 mph).
When the warning turns off
The front passenger returns to a proper seating position.
The warning has been active for a cumulative total of 100 seconds.
|
|
NOTE
Pressing OK on the warning message dismisses it immediately. If the front passenger remains out of position, the audible warning may continue for up to 100 seconds.
If the message is dismissed but the passenger remains out of position, the warning may activate again after approximately 15 minutes.
The passenger air bag ON/OFF indicator is displayed regardless of vehicle speed.
The out-of-position warning may be triggered in situations such as these:
Sitting too close to the air bag: The front passenger leans too close to the dashboard.
|
Feet on the dashboard: The front passenger places one or both feet on the dashboard.
|
Limitations of the out-of-position warning
The system may not detect an improper seating position reliably, or may issue a warning unexpectedly, in the following situations:
A human-like object is placed on the front passenger seat.
The front passenger's face or body is obscured.
The front passenger is wearing bulky clothing or headwear.
The front passenger is holding a large or bulky item, such as a box or large bag.
CAUTION
Depending on the air bag system fitted to the vehicle, the front passenger air bag may not deploy in certain out-of-position situations to help prevent further injury.
The out-of-position warning is a supplementary safety feature and may not detect every improper seating position. Regardless of whether a warning appears, each occupant is responsible for maintaining a proper seating position at all times.
