Kia Sportage: Parking brake (hand-operated type): (if equipped)After parking the Kia Sportage, apply the parking brake to help prevent the vehicle from moving under external force.
Applying the parking brake
|
To apply the parking brake, press the foot brake and pull the parking brake lever up as far as it will go.
When parking on an incline with a manual transmission, it is also recommended that you leave the transmission in a low gear.
CAUTION
Driving with the parking brake applied causes excessive wear to the brake pads and discs.
Do not apply the parking brake while the vehicle is moving except in an emergency. Doing so could damage the vehicle system and compromise driving safety.
Releasing the parking brake
|
To release the parking brake:
Press the foot brake and pull the parking brake lever up slightly.
Press the release button (1). While holding it in, lower the parking brake lever (2).
If the parking brake does not release, or does not release completely, have it inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
Take care when parking on a hill. Apply the parking brake firmly and, with a manual transmission, select 1st or Reverse. If the Kia Sportage is facing downhill, turn the front wheels towards the kerb to help prevent the vehicle from rolling. If it is facing uphill, turn the front wheels away from the kerb. If there is no kerb, or additional restraint is needed, chock the wheels.
In certain conditions, the parking brake may freeze while applied. This is most likely when snow or ice has built up around the rear brakes or when the brakes are wet. If freezing is a risk, apply the parking brake only temporarily. Select 1st or Reverse with a manual transmission and chock the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling, then release the parking brake.
Do not hold the vehicle on an uphill slope with the accelerator pedal. This may cause the transmission to overheat. Use the brake pedal or parking brake to keep the Kia Sportage stationary.
WARNING
Never allow a passenger to operate the parking brake. If it is released accidentally, the vehicle could move and cause serious injury.
Always apply the parking brake fully when parking to help prevent unintended vehicle movement that could injure occupants or pedestrians.

Check that the brake warning light illuminates by turning the ignition switch to ON without starting the engine. The light indicates that the parking brake is applied when the ignition switch or ENGINE START/STOP button is in the START or ON position.
Before driving, make sure the parking brake is fully released and the brake warning light has gone out.
If the brake warning light remains illuminated after the parking brake has been released and the engine is running, the brake system may have a fault and requires immediate attention.
If possible, stop driving the Kia Sportage immediately. If you cannot stop at once, proceed with extreme caution and drive only as far as needed to reach a safe location or repair workshop.
