Kia Sportage: Starting the engineWARNING
Wear suitable footwear when driving the Kia Sportage. Shoes such as high heels or ski boots may make it harder to operate the brake and accelerator pedals correctly.
Do not start the vehicle with the accelerator pedal pressed. The vehicle could move unexpectedly and cause an accident.
Wait until the engine speed settles to its normal level before driving. If engine speed is high, the vehicle may move suddenly when you release the brake pedal.
Operation
Make sure the parking brake is applied before starting.
With a manual transmission, fully depress the clutch pedal and shift into N (Neutral). Keep the clutch and brake pedals depressed until the engine starts.
With an automatic or dual clutch transmission, fully depress the brake pedal and make sure the gear is in P (Park). The engine can also be started in N (Neutral).
Fully depress the brake pedal.
Turn the key to START or press the ENGINE START/STOP button to start the engine.

will appear.
When the glow indicator
turns off, turn the key to
START or press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button while fully depressing the
brake pedal for an automatic or dual clutch transmission, or the brake and clutch pedals for a manual
transmission. Continue until the engine starts.
NOTE
If the engine does not start within 10 seconds after preheating is complete, turn the ignition key back to LOCK and wait 10 seconds. Then turn it to ON to begin preheating again.
If you press the ENGINE START/STOP button again while the engine is preheating, the engine may start.
Operation
After starting the Kia Sportage, allow the engine to idle for a few seconds. This gives the turbocharger time to receive lubrication before the vehicle is driven.
Before switching the vehicle off, let the engine idle for approximately one minute so the turbocharger can cool down.
WARNING
Wait until the engine speed has returned to its normal level before releasing the brake pedal. If engine speed is still high, the vehicle may move suddenly.
CAUTION
With an automatic or dual clutch transmission, the engine can also be started with the gear in N (Neutral). For safety, start the engine with the gear in P (Park).
After the engine has been subjected to a heavy load, do not switch it off immediately. Doing so may cause serious damage to the engine or turbocharger.
If the engine stalls while the Kia Sportage is moving, do not shift into P (Park). If traffic and road conditions allow, shift into N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving and turn the ignition switch to START to try to restart the engine.
Do not operate the starter for more than 10 seconds at a time. If the engine stalls or does not start, wait 5 to 10 seconds before trying again. Using the starter incorrectly may damage it.
Never turn the ignition switch to START while the engine is running, as this may damage the starter.
NOTE
If the vehicle has a kickdown mechanism in the accelerator pedal, it helps prevent unintended full-throttle driving by requiring extra effort to press the pedal fully.
