Kia Sportage: ENGINE START/STOP button: (if equipped). Starting the engine with the smart key![]() |
Operation
OFF
With the transmission in P (Park) on an automatic or dual clutch transmission, or N (Neutral) on a manual transmission, press the ENGINE START/STOP button to switch the vehicle off.
ACC (Accessory)
Press the ENGINE START/STOP button once without pressing the brake pedal on an automatic or dual clutch transmission, or without pressing the brake and clutch pedals on a manual transmission.
Electrical accessories can now be used.
To help prevent battery discharge, ACC switches off automatically after approximately one hour.
ON
Press the ENGINE START/STOP button twice without pressing the brake pedal on an automatic or dual clutch transmission, or the brake and clutch pedals on a manual transmission.
The vehicle’s warning lights can be checked.
START/RUN
On an automatic or dual clutch transmission, press the ENGINE START/STOP button while pressing the brake pedal, with the transmission in P (Park). On a manual transmission, press the button while pressing both the brake and clutch pedals, with the transmission in N (Neutral).
For safety, start the engine in P (Park) on an automatic or dual clutch transmission, or N (Neutral) on a manual transmission, with the parking brake applied.
WARNING
Never press the ENGINE START/STOP button while the Kia Sportage is moving. Doing so may disable steering control and braking assistance, which could cause an accident.
Before leaving the driver’s seat, always select P (Park), apply the parking brake fully and switch off the engine. If these steps are missed, the vehicle may move unexpectedly.
Never reach through the steering wheel to press the ENGINE START/STOP button or operate another control while driving. Your arm or hand could interfere with vehicle control and result in an accident, serious injury or death.
Do not leave loose objects around the driver’s seat. They could shift while driving, distract you or interfere with vehicle controls.
NOTE
Leaving the ENGINE START/STOP button in ACC or ON for an extended period may discharge the battery.
If you press the ENGINE START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal, the engine will not start. Each press changes the button mode in this sequence:
OFF > ACC > ON > OFF or ACC
ENGINE START/STOP button interlock system: (if equipped)
The ENGINE START/STOP button cannot be switched to OFF unless the transmission is in P (Park).
The Kia Sportage checks for the smart key when either of the following occurs:
A vehicle door is opened.
The ENGINE START/STOP button is pressed.
If the smart key is not inside the vehicle, the indicator
and a message appear on
the instrument cluster.
WARNING
The engine will start only when the smart key is inside the vehicle. Never allow children or anyone unfamiliar with the vehicle to touch the ENGINE START/STOP button or related components. Pressing the button while the smart key is inside the Kia Sportage could start the engine unexpectedly or cause the vehicle to move without warning.
CAUTION
If the engine stalls while the vehicle is moving, do not shift into P (Park). If traffic and road conditions allow, shift into N (Neutral) while the vehicle is still moving and press the ENGINE START/STOP button to try to restart the engine.
Do not press the ENGINE START/STOP button for more than 10 seconds, except when the stop lamp fuse has blown.
Do not turn the ignition switch to START while the engine is running; doing so may damage the starter.
The engine can also be started with the gear in N (Neutral). For safety, however, start it with the gear in P (Park).
NOTE
If the battery is weak or the smart key is not working correctly, you can start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button with the smart key itself. Hold the key against the button at a right angle.
|
If the stop lamp fuse has blown, the engine cannot be started in the usual way.
Replace the fuse with a new one. If replacement is not possible, you can start the engine by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button for 10 seconds while it is in the ACC position. This method can start the engine without pressing the brake pedal, but always press the brake pedal before starting for safety.
