Kia Sportage: Storing urea solution. Urea solution purityDo not store urea solution in containers made from unsuitable materials, including aluminium, copper alloys, unalloyed steel or galvanised steel. Urea solution can dissolve these metals, potentially causing severe, irreparable damage to the exhaust purification system.
Use only containers made from materials suitable for urea solution, such as:
CR-Ni steel, Mo-Cr-Ni steel, polypropylene or polyethylene specified under DIN EN 10088-1, -2 or -3.
The following can damage the DPF system:
Putting fuel or any other unauthorised liquid into the urea solution tank.
Mixing additives into the urea solution.
Adding water to dilute the urea solution.
Use only urea solution that meets ISO 22241 or DIN 70070. If an unauthorised product has been added to the Kia Sportage urea solution tank, have the vehicle inspected by a professional workshop. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
Contamination of the urea solution tank can lead to:
Increased emissions.
A DPF system malfunction.
Engine failure.
Never pour previously used urea solution back into the tank after draining it during vehicle maintenance. Its purity cannot be verified. Always refill with new urea solution.

Standard urea solution specifications |
Never use diesel, petrol, alcohol or any other liquid in the SCR system. Fluids that do not meet the recommended ISO 22241 or DIN 70070 specifications can damage SCR system components and increase vehicle emissions. |
Warning
When the urea solution tank cap is opened in warm outdoor conditions, ammonia vapour may escape. It has a pungent smell and can irritate the:
Skin.
Mucous membranes.
Eyes.
Exposure may cause a burning sensation in the eyes, nose or throat, coughing and watery eyes. Do not breathe in ammonia vapour or allow urea solution to come into direct contact with your skin. If contact occurs, rinse the affected area with plenty of clean water and consult a doctor if necessary.
When handling urea solution in an enclosed space, ensure that it is well ventilated. Opening a container may release pungent-smelling vapours.
Store urea solution where children cannot reach it.
If urea solution spills onto the vehicle, rinse the affected surface with clean water to help prevent corrosion.
Refill carefully to prevent the urea solution from overflowing.
If the Kia Sportage has been parked for an extended period at an ambient temperature below -11°C, the urea solution in the tank may freeze. While it is frozen, the tank level may not be detected accurately. A heater activates to thaw the solution, but incorrect or diluted urea solution can have a higher freezing point and may not thaw properly. This can cause an SCR system malfunction and may prevent the engine from restarting.
The time required to thaw the urea solution depends on the driving conditions and the outside temperature.
Caution
Defective urea solution or an unapproved liquid can damage vehicle components, including emissions-control equipment. Contaminants can collect in the SCR catalyst, causing it to clog or fail.
If you have added incorrect urea solution, contact an authorised Kia dealer or service partner as soon as possible.
Do not use diesel, petrol, alcohol or other unapproved liquids in place of urea solution that meets ISO 22241 or DIN 70070.
Using defective urea solution or an unapproved liquid can damage vehicle components, including the emissions-treatment system. Contaminants may accumulate in the SCR catalyst, causing it to become obstructed or break.
