Bonnet release lever
Secondary bonnet release lever
Support rod
Operation
Pull the bonnet release lever (1).
Push the secondary bonnet release lever (2) to the left.
Raise the bonnet.
Remove the support rod (3) from its retaining clip.
Secure the open bonnet with the support rod.
WARNING
Before opening the bonnet, park the Kia Sportage on a level surface, switch off the engine, shift into P (Park) and apply the parking brake.
Hold the support rod by its rubber-covered section. If the engine is hot, the rubber helps protect your hand from the hot metal rod.
When inspecting the engine compartment, insert the support rod fully into the designated hole in the bonnet. This helps keep the bonnet from falling and causing injury.

Operation
Before closing the bonnet, check that:
All filler caps in the engine compartment are fitted correctly.
Gloves, rags and other combustible materials have been removed from the engine compartment.
Return the support rod to its retaining clip so it cannot rattle.
Lower the bonnet to approximately 30 cm (12 inches) above the closed position, then let it drop. Check that it latches securely.
Confirm that the bonnet is fully latched.
If the bonnet can be lifted slightly, it has not engaged properly.
Open it again, then lower and release it with a little more force.
WARNING
Before closing the bonnet, remove anything that could obstruct the opening or latch. Closing it over an obstruction may damage property or cause serious personal injury.
Do not leave gloves, rags or other combustible materials in the engine compartment. Heat may cause them to catch fire.
Always check that the bonnet is latched firmly before driving. If it opens while the Kia Sportage is moving, it may block your view and cause an accident.
Do not drive with the bonnet raised. It will obstruct your view and could fall or be damaged.
