Kia Sportage: Fuel filler door
|
Operation
Switch off the engine before refuelling your Kia Sportage.
Make sure all the doors are unlocked so the fuel filler door can be opened.
Press the rear centre edge of the fuel filler door (1) to release and open it.
Turn the fuel tank cap (2) counterclockwise and remove it.
Place the cap on the fuel filler door while refuelling.
WARNING
Before refuelling, confirm which type of fuel is specified for your Kia Sportage. Filling a petrol-powered vehicle with diesel, or a diesel-powered vehicle with petrol, can affect the fuel system and cause serious vehicle damage.
NOTE
The fuel filler door unlocks when the driver’s door is unlocked. You can unlock the driver’s door using any of these methods:
Press the unlock button on the smart key.
Press the central door unlock button on the driver’s door armrest trim.
Pull the driver’s interior door handle outward.
The fuel filler door locks when all the doors are locked. To lock the doors and fuel filler door:
Press the lock button on the smart key.
Press the central door lock button on the driver’s door armrest trim.
All doors lock automatically once the Kia Sportage exceeds 15 km/h (9.3 mph). The fuel filler door also locks at this speed.
If ice around the fuel filler door prevents it from opening, tap or press the door gently to loosen the ice. Do not pry it open. If needed, apply an approved de-icer around the door; do not use radiator antifreeze. You can also move the vehicle to a warmer place and let the ice melt.
If the fuel filler door will not open in certain conditions, such as during an electrical malfunction, contact a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
Operation
Turn the fuel tank cap (2) clockwise until you hear it click securely into place.
Press the rear centre edge of the fuel filler door (1) until it closes.
Check that all doors and the fuel filler door are locked before leaving the Kia Sportage.
WARNING
Automotive fuel is highly flammable. Follow these precautions whenever you refuel. Ignoring them could lead to a fire or explosion, causing severe injury, serious burns or death.
Read and follow all safety notices displayed at the fuel station.
Before refuelling, locate the emergency petrol shut-off at the station, if one is provided.
Before handling the fuel nozzle, discharge any static electricity by touching a metal part of the vehicle with your bare hand. Choose a point well away from the fuel filler neck, nozzle and other sources of fuel vapour.
Do not use a mobile phone while refuelling. Electrical current or electronic interference from a phone could ignite fuel vapour.
Once you begin refuelling, do not get back into the vehicle. Touching, rubbing against or sliding over a surface or fabric can build up static electricity. A static discharge could ignite fuel vapour.
Before refuelling, shift the gear to P (Park), apply the parking brake and set the ignition switch or
ENGINE START/STOP button to LOCK/OFF. Sparks from engine-related electrical components
could ignite fuel vapour.
If you use an approved portable fuel container, place it on the ground before filling it. Static electricity from the container could ignite fuel vapour. Once refuelling begins, maintain contact between your bare hand and the vehicle until filling is complete.
Use only approved portable plastic containers designed for carrying and storing petrol.
Do not use matches or a lighter, smoke, or leave a lit cigarette in the vehicle while at a fuel station, especially during refuelling.
Do not overfill the fuel tank or top it off after refuelling, as fuel may spill.
If a fire starts while refuelling, move away from the vehicle and notify the fuel station manager immediately. Then contact the local fire department and follow the safety instructions provided.
Pressurised fuel may spray onto your clothing or skin, creating a risk of fire and burns. Remove the fuel cap slowly and carefully. If fuel vents from the cap or you hear a hissing sound, wait until it stops before removing the cap completely.
After refuelling, check that the fuel cap is fitted securely to help prevent fuel from spilling in the event of an accident.
CAUTION
Set the vehicle door locks while washing the Kia Sportage, including when using a high-pressure washer or an automatic car wash. This helps keep the fuel filler door locked during washing.
NOTE
To lock the fuel filler door, close it completely and lock the vehicle doors. The fuel filler door will remain unlocked if it has not been shut fully.
Refuel the Kia Sportage only with fuel that meets the vehicle’s fuel requirements.
Keep fuel off the vehicle’s exterior. Spilled fuel can damage painted surfaces.
If the fuel filler cap needs replacing, use a Kia Genuine Part or an equivalent part specified for your vehicle. An unsuitable cap could cause a serious fault in the fuel or emission control system.
Keep fuel off the vehicle’s exterior. Any fuel spilled on painted surfaces may damage the paint.
After refuelling, make sure the fuel cap is securely installed to help prevent fuel from spilling in the event of an accident.
TIP
If the fuel filler door will not open in certain circumstances, such as during an electrical malfunction, contact a professional workshop. Kia recommends visiting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
