Kia Sportage: Vehicle Handling Instructions. Vehicle Data Collection and Event Data Recorders (EDR)As with other vehicles of this type, incorrect operation of the Kia Sportage can lead to loss of control, an accident or a rollover.
Features such as higher ground clearance and track give this vehicle a higher centre of gravity than some other vehicle types. As a result, it is not designed to take corners at the same speeds as a conventional two-wheel-drive vehicle.
Avoid sharp turns and sudden manoeuvres. Driving the vehicle in a way that does not account for its handling characteristics can result in loss of control, an accident or a rollover.
Read the section “Reducing the Risk of a Rollover” for further information.
This vehicle is equipped with an event data recorder (EDR). Its primary purpose is to record information in certain crash or near-crash situations, such as an airbag deployment or a collision with a road obstacle. The recorded information can help explain how the vehicle’s systems performed. The EDR is designed to capture data about vehicle dynamics and safety systems for a short period, typically 30 seconds or less. Depending on the event, the EDR in this vehicle may record:
How various systems in the vehicle were operating;
Whether the driver’s and passenger’s seat belts were buckled or fastened;
How far, if at all, the driver was pressing the accelerator and/or brake pedal; and
The vehicle’s speed.
This information can help improve understanding of the circumstances in which crashes and injuries occur. The EDR records data only when a significant crash situation occurs; it does not record data during normal driving. The EDR does not record personal information such as a person’s name, gender or age, or the location of a crash. However, other parties, such as law enforcement, may be able to combine EDR data with personally identifying information routinely collected during a crash investigation.
Reading EDR data requires special equipment and access to the vehicle or the EDR. In addition to the vehicle manufacturer, parties such as law enforcement may be able to read the recorded information if they have the necessary equipment and access.
