Kia Sportage: Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist operationBlind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) provides warnings and, in certain situations, braking assistance. Its operation includes the following stages:
Collision warning
Collision-avoidance assistance while departing from a parking space

Figure 1. First warning (left/right)
|
When BCA detects a vehicle approaching from behind in an adjacent lane, a warning indicator appears on the instrument cluster and in the outside rearview mirror. The warning is also shown on the head-up display, if equipped.
The system can detect a vehicle when the following conditions are met:
Your Kia Sportage is travelling faster than 20 km/h (12 mph).
The vehicle in the blind-spot area is travelling faster than 10 km/h (6 mph).
Once a vehicle has been detected, BCA can warn you if you activate the turn signal to change lanes while that vehicle is in the adjacent blind-spot area.
The warning may include an indicator on the instrument cluster and outside rearview mirror, steering wheel vibration if equipped, a head-up display alert if equipped, and an audible warning.
The collision warning is cancelled when you switch off the turn signal or move away from the lane. BCA then returns to vehicle detection mode.
Turn-signal collision warnings operate when the following conditions are met:
Your vehicle is travelling faster than 40 km/h (25 mph).
The vehicle in the blind-spot area is travelling faster than 10 km/h (6 mph).
WARNING
The rear corner radar’s detection range is based on a standard road width. On a narrow road, BCA may detect a vehicle two lanes away and issue a warning. On a wide road, it may not detect a vehicle in the adjacent lane or provide a warning.
The turn-signal collision warning does not operate while the hazard warning flashers are on.
NOTE
Depending on which side the driver’s seat is on, a collision warning may be issued when turning left or right. For example, it may sound during a left turn in a left-hand-drive vehicle or during a right turn in a right-hand-drive vehicle.
Maintain an appropriate distance from vehicles in adjacent lanes.
The appearance and colours of the indicators may vary with the instrument cluster specifications or selected theme.
For further information about the Kia Sportage instrument cluster, refer to the “Instrument cluster” section.

A: Emergency braking |
If BCA detects a vehicle approaching in the blind-spot area while the Kia Sportage is pulling forward from a parking space, it can warn the driver and assist with braking to help prevent a collision. Alerts may include the warning light in the outside rearview mirror, a head-up display warning if equipped, steering wheel vibration if equipped, and an audible signal.
Collision-avoidance assistance while departing can activate when both of the following conditions are met:
Your vehicle is travelling below 3 km/h (2 mph).
The vehicle approaching in the blind-spot area is travelling above 5 km/h (3 mph).

A: Drive carefully |
If emergency braking brings the vehicle to a stop, a warning message appears on the instrument cluster. For your safety, press and hold the brake pedal promptly and check the area around the vehicle before proceeding.
After emergency braking has stopped the vehicle, braking control ends after approximately two seconds.
WARNING
For your safety, adjust the settings only after parking the Kia Sportage in a safe location.
If another function displays a warning message or sounds an alert at the same time, BCA’s warning message or audible warning may not be shown or heard.
Noise in the surrounding area may make BCA’s audible warning difficult to hear. Stay alert to traffic and keep the vehicle’s audio volume at a moderate level.
BCA may not provide braking assistance if you press the brake pedal to avoid a collision.
While BCA is applying braking control, the assistance is cancelled automatically if you press the accelerator pedal too firmly or turn the steering wheel sharply.
BCA may stop the vehicle suddenly. Occupants could be injured and unsecured items may move. Wear seat belts and secure loose objects before driving.
If BCA develops a fault, the vehicle’s basic braking system will continue to operate.
BCA cannot prevent collisions in every situation. Its ability to operate and help avoid an impact depends on the circumstances.
Road and driving conditions may cause BCA to issue a warning late or not issue one at all.
The driver remains responsible for controlling the vehicle. Do not rely on BCA alone; check your surroundings directly and drive with care.
Never deliberately use BCA on people, animals or objects. Doing so could cause serious injury or death.
WARNING
Braking assistance may be affected by the operation or condition of Electronic Stability Control (ESC). BCA may provide a warning without braking assistance in either of these situations:
The ESC warning light is illuminated.
ESC is intervening through another function.
