Kia Sportage: Forward Attention Warning malfunction and limitations
![]() |
|
If Forward Attention Warning detects a fault, a message appears on the Kia Sportage instrument cluster for several
seconds. The Forward Attention Warning indicator (
) and Master Warning Light (
) also illuminate, and a single audible alert sounds. Have the
system inspected by a qualified workshop. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.

If an object remains directly in front of the in-cabin camera or between the camera and the driver, Forward Attention
Warning may not operate correctly. A warning message then appears on the instrument cluster for several seconds, the
Forward Attention Warning indicator (
) and
Master Warning Light (
) illuminate, and a
single audible alert sounds.
Once the obstruction is removed and the camera can recognise the driver’s face, the function should operate normally. If Forward Attention Warning still does not work correctly, have the Kia Sportage inspected by a qualified workshop. Kia recommends contacting an authorised Kia dealer or service partner.
CAUTION
Do not strike or otherwise damage the camera or the area around it. Damage to the in-cabin camera may prevent Forward Attention Warning from working correctly.
Do not place objects on or in front of the camera while driving, as they may obstruct its view.
Clean the camera lens gently with a soft, clean cloth. Do not use sharp tools near the camera or clean it with chemicals, which could damage the lens.
Keep the camera and the surrounding area clean and dry.
Do not place stickers or other objects near the infrared LED beside the camera.
TIP
The camera’s infrared lights may be visible in these conditions:
Ambient light is low or the vehicle is being driven at night.
The Kia Sportage is inside a building, such as an underground car park, garage or tunnel.
The camera housing is partly damaged.

If the camera cannot recognise the driver’s face, Forward Attention Warning may not operate correctly. A warning
message appears on the instrument cluster for several seconds, the Forward Attention Warning indicator (
) and Master
Warning Light (
) illuminate, and a
single audible alert sounds.
This message does not necessarily mean the system is faulty. Forward Attention Warning should resume normal operation once the camera can recognise the driver’s face again.
Forward Attention Warning may not work correctly, or may respond unexpectedly, in any of the following situations:
The driver is wearing sunglasses, special-purpose glasses, infrared-filtering glasses, refractive glasses or thick-lensed glasses.
Heavy eye makeup, such as eyeliner, mascara, colour cosmetics or false eyelashes, or piercings around the eyes interfere with recognition.
The driver’s hair, a hat or another item obstructs the camera’s view of the face.
The driver winks or wears an eye patch over one eye.
A mask, scarf or similar item partly covers the driver’s face.
Light entering the vehicle blocks the camera’s view of the driver.
Sunlight, other external light or the camera’s infrared light reflects off the driver’s glasses or sunglasses.
The driver turns or lowers their head so that the camera cannot see the face or eyes.
The driver shakes their head, or rough road conditions cause excessive vehicle vibration.
The driver is sitting in a position that prevents the camera from detecting their face.
The driver is outside the height range the camera can recognise.
More than two people are looking at the instrument cluster at the same time from the driver’s seat.
The driver’s eyes narrow because of laughter or sun glare.
The camera mistakes a picture or mannequin similar in size to the driver’s face for the driver.
Another device in the vehicle is using infrared light.
The inside rearview mirror is tilted too far, placing the in-cabin camera’s field of view outside its detection range.
