Kia Sportage: Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist Operation
Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist responds according to the level of collision risk. Its operation may
include the following stages:
- Collision warning
- Emergency braking
- Bringing the vehicle to a stop and ending brake control
Collision Warning
A: Collision Warning
If Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist detects an approaching vehicle, Collision Warning alerts the driver
with an indicator on the outside rear-view mirror, a message, an audible warning, and steering-wheel vibration if
equipped.
When the feature is equipped and the relevant display is available, the collision warning is also shown on the
infotainment screen.
Collision Warning operates only when all of the following conditions are met:
- The gear is shifted to R (Reverse) while the Kia Sportage is travelling below 8 km/h (5 mph).
- The approaching vehicle is within approximately 25 m (82 ft) of either the left or right side of your vehicle.
- The approaching vehicle is travelling faster than 5 km/h (3 mph).
NOTE
- If the operating conditions are met, the system can issue a warning when a vehicle approaches from either side
even while your vehicle is stationary.
- Instrument-cluster images and colours may vary depending on the cluster type and the selected theme.
Emergency Braking
A: Emergency Braking
When a potential collision with an approaching vehicle is detected, Collision Warning alerts the driver with an
indicator on the outside rear-view mirror, a warning message, an audible alert, and steering-wheel vibration if
equipped.
If equipped, the warning is also displayed on the infotainment screen.
Emergency Braking may apply braking assistance to help prevent a collision with a vehicle approaching from the rear
blind spot.
Emergency Braking operates only when all of the following conditions are met:
- The gear is shifted to R (Reverse) while the Kia Sportage is travelling below 8 km/h (5 mph).
- The approaching vehicle is within approximately 1.5 m (5 ft) of either the left or right side of your vehicle.
- The approaching vehicle is travelling faster than 5 km/h (3 mph).
WARNING
Brake control ends if any of the following conditions apply to the vehicle approaching from the rear left or right:
- It moves outside the system’s detection range.
- It passes behind your vehicle.
- It is no longer travelling toward your vehicle.
- Its speed decreases.
- You press the brake pedal with sufficient force.
Stopping the Vehicle and Ending Brake Control
|
A: Drive carefully
|
If Emergency Braking brings the Kia Sportage to a stop, a warning message appears in the instrument cluster.
For your safety, press the brake pedal immediately and check the area around the vehicle before proceeding.
- After Emergency Braking has stopped the vehicle, brake control ends after approximately 2 seconds.
- During Emergency Braking, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist automatically cancels its braking control
if you press the brake pedal with excessive force.
WARNING
- For your safety, change the settings only after parking the Kia Sportage in a safe location.
- If a warning message or audible alert from another function is active, the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance
Assist warning message may not appear and its audible warning may not sound.
- Noise in the surrounding area may make the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist warning difficult to
hear.
- The system may not operate if you press the brake pedal to avoid a collision.
- When Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist applies the brakes, the vehicle may stop suddenly. This could
injure passengers or cause unsecured items to move. Wear your seat belt and secure loose objects in the vehicle.
- If Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist has a problem, the vehicle’s basic braking performance remains
available.
WARNING
- While Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist is operating, its braking control automatically cancels if you
press the accelerator pedal with excessive force.
- Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist cannot operate in every situation and cannot prevent every
collision.
- Depending on the road and driving conditions, the system may warn you late or may not issue a warning.
- You remain responsible for controlling the Kia Sportage. Do not rely solely on Rear Cross-Traffic
Collision-Avoidance Assist. Maintain a safe braking distance, and press the brake pedal when needed to slow down or
stop the vehicle.
- Never deliberately activate Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist toward people, animals, or objects.
Doing so could cause serious injury or death.
WARNING
Brake control may not operate correctly depending on the status of ESC (Electronic Stability Control).
The system provides a warning only in either of these situations:
- The ESC warning light is illuminated.
- ESC is operating to perform another function.
NOTE
- If Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist provides braking assistance, press the brake pedal immediately
and check the area around the Kia Sportage.
- After you shift to R (Reverse), braking control operates once for an approaching vehicle on each side: once for a
vehicle approaching from the left and once for a vehicle approaching from the right.
