Kia Sportage: Highway Lane Change Assist: (if equipped)Display and control
The Driving Assist view on the Kia Sportage instrument cluster shows the current status of Highway Lane Change Assist. For more information about the instrument cluster, see Instrument cluster.
The display changes according to the function’s current status, as shown below.

Figure 2. Standby/cancelled

Highway Lane Change Assist indicator:
Green
illuminated: The
function is ready.
Green
flashing: The function is operating.
Grey
illuminated: The
function is on standby.
White
flashing: The function has been cancelled. This indication appears for a limited time.
Lane line
The lane line is shown in a style that corresponds to the Highway Lane Change Assist indicator (1). In standby mode, the display also shows whether lane detection is available.
Green arrow and shaded area
After the function has been operating for a certain period, a green arrow appears and remains visible until the lane change is complete.
Message
A message appears if the function does not operate after the turn signal lever is used.
A message also appears if the function is cancelled while operating.
Highway Lane Change Assist switches on when both of the following conditions are met:
Highway Driving Assist is activated using the Driving Assist button or the Lane Driving Assist button.
When a message asking whether to use Highway Lane Change Assist appears on the instrument cluster, the driver presses the OK button on the steering wheel.
Turning on Highway Lane Change Assist
|
A: Press the OK button to enable Lane Change Assist |
When Highway Lane Change Assist is switched on, it is ready to operate only when all of the following conditions are satisfied:
Highway Driving Assist is operating.
Lane Following Assist is operating.
Since the vehicle was switched on, a vehicle in the area behind it has been detected at least once.
The vehicle is travelling faster than 30 km/h (20 mph).
At low speeds, the system can operate only when vehicles in both adjacent lanes are recognised and the lane change can be made without a collision risk. The low-speed range is 30–80 km/h (20–50 mph).
No hands-off warning is displayed on the instrument cluster.
The hazard warning flasher is off.
NOTE
While Lane Change Assist is switched on and its indicator is illuminated, Lane Following Assist does not cancel when the turn signal or hazard warning flasher is used.
Lane Change Assist switches off automatically in the following road conditions:
The road has only one driving lane.
The road has no physical centre divider, such as a guardrail.
An intersection or pedestrian crossing is ahead.
A pedestrian or cyclist is on the road ahead.
If the vehicle’s speed falls below 25 km/h (15 mph) while the function is ready, it changes to standby mode.
At low speeds, the function changes to standby if vehicles in the adjacent lanes on both sides are not recognised. The low-speed range is 30–80 km/h (20–50 mph).
If the system detects a collision risk, it changes to standby mode.
Instrument cluster images and colours may vary according to the cluster specifications or selected theme.
Lane markings and surrounding objects shown on the cluster may differ from actual road conditions.
WARNING
If Highway Lane Change Assist switches off while operating, steering assistance is temporarily cancelled. Stay alert and continue to control the vehicle carefully.
Highway Lane Change Assist operating
|
When the function is ready—the
indicator is green—move the turn signal lever to position (A) or (B). The system will assist with the lane change only
if all of the following conditions are met:
The driver’s hands are on the steering wheel.
There is no collision risk in the direction of the lane change.
The road has two lanes, and the lane marking in the direction of travel is a broken line, regardless of its colour.
There are no Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist or Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist warnings.
The vehicle is travelling near the centre of its lane, rather than close to either lane edge.
The current road and the lane into which the vehicle would move are both suitable for the function.
NOTE
If the turn signal lever is moved to position (A), Highway Lane Change Assist begins the lane-change manoeuvre. If the lever is returned to neutral before the vehicle crosses the lane marking, the function is cancelled.
Once the vehicle has crossed into the target lane, the manoeuvre is not cancelled in this way. The function ends and the turn signal switches off when the lane change is complete.
If the turn signal lever is held in position (B) for a certain period, a green arrow appears. The system continues assisting the lane change even after the lever is released and returns to its original position.
While the system assists with the manoeuvre, the turn signal flashes even if the lever is no longer being held. It switches off when the lane change is complete.
Highway Lane Change Assist standby
Highway Lane Change Assist enters standby if any ready-state condition is no longer met, or if the vehicle enters or travels on one of the following roads:
A section of the highway or motorway main road within a certain distance of a tollgate.
A road that ends without an interchange or junction ahead.
A sharply curved road.
A road with narrow lanes.
Cancelling Highway Lane Change Assist
The function is cancelled in any of the following situations:
The turn signal is activated in the direction opposite to the intended lane change.
The driver turns the steering wheel sharply.
While the function is operating, the turn signal lever is moved to position (A) and then returned to the N (Neutral) position before the vehicle changes lanes.
WARNING
Highway Lane Change Assist is cancelled while operating if any of the following occurs:
Highway Driving Assist is switched off.
Lane Following Assist or Smart Cruise Control is switched off or temporarily cancelled.
A hands-off warning appears on the instrument cluster.
The hazard warning flasher is switched on.
A warning message for Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist or Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist appears.
A collision risk is detected in the target lane, even if no warning from Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist or Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist is displayed.
The target lane disappears or can no longer be detected.
A turn signal lamp has a problem.
Highway Lane Change Assist is switched off. This can happen if the function is disabled in the settings, the road becomes one-way, an intersection or pedestrian crossing is ahead, the vehicle enters a road without a physical divider such as a median or guardrail, or a pedestrian or cyclist is in the driving lane.
If the vehicle’s speed falls below 25 km/h (15 mph) while the function is ready, it changes to standby mode.
At low speeds, the function changes to standby if vehicles in both adjacent lanes are not recognised. The low-speed range is 30–80 km/h (20–50 mph).
A collision risk is detected.
When the function is cancelled during a lane change, the Kia Sportage may move towards the centre of the driving lane, or steering assistance may stop, depending on driving conditions. Continue to monitor the road and control the vehicle.
The function may not operate as intended on roads with pedestrians or cyclists, including near intersections and pedestrian crossings. Pay close attention to the road and surrounding traffic.

is present, in any of the following situations:
